While honesty is unquestionably important, there are moments when it’s crucial to consider the appropriate timing and context for being candid and authentic.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked, “Am I wrong for tattling on how my cousin died?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP’s cousin, Mel, recently died of a drug overdose. He was just 23.
MEL HAD A TROUBLED LIFE
Mel had a troubled life. He started doing drugs in middle school. He also went to jail twice, and started living with his grandmother after his jail time.
OP’S GRANDMOTHER LOVED MEL
OP’s grandmother had always gushed over Mel. His grandmother acted like Mel was just a misunderstood boy, and that he was too smart for his own mind.
THE FUNERAL
At Mel’s funeral, his grandmother was telling a family member that Mel has always had health problems, and that he died of a heart attack.
A TRAGIC ACCIDENT?
OP’s grandmother made it sound like Mel’s death was some kind of a tragic accident that a young man died because of the hospital’s incompetency or something like that.
OP INTERRUPTED
OP instantly interrupted his grandmother and told her that Mel had died from meth laced with fentanyl. OP also said that Mel was dead before he made it to the hospital and that Mel was not some tragic hero of some sort.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP’s grandmother called him mad and asked him to stop airing the family’s dirty laundry. She also added that Mel was a good boy, who was just a little troubled!
THEY CALLED OP A HORRIBLE KID
Meth’s mother and grandmother called OP a horrible kid and started badmouthing him to his parents. OP’s father added fuel to the fire by saying “At least I won’t ever have to look at my kid in a casket from dying from a meth overdose.”
THEY WERE ASKED TO LEAVE
OP and his family were asked to leave. OP’s grandmother had been crying to OP’s mother over the call, about how horrible they all were, ever since the incident took place.
Now OP wants to know if what he did was wrong?
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“Interrupting your grandmother to speak ill of the dead at their own funeral? Grow up. You can disagree and think whatever you want about Mel’s passing, but why rub salt in the wounds of those who are already mourning?”, said one user.
PEOPLE DEAL WITH GRIEF DIFFERENTLY
“Everyone deals with grief differently. We all know the first phase is denial.
For some, lying to say it was an accident helps with the grief process. But for some, being honest and real and saying the real cause of death helps to each their own. Creating and enabling the lie can cause the grieving process to continue for longer, perhaps to an unhealthy amount of time.”, said another user.
