A young girl begged her aunt for some apple juice, but the aunt refused, even after the girl cried.
A user asked the forum, “Am I a jerk for not giving my autistic niece the only juice I had?”. Read the complete story to know more.
BACKSTORY
The original poster (OP) (18F) is a diabetic, and she has an autistic niece (7F).
OP says that the previous day her family went hiking, and her brother’s family came along, they were walking along the mountains, and her niece suddenly wanted juice, and her SIL gave her sugar-free orange juice. Her niece refused it and said she wanted apple juice.
WHO HAD APPLE JUICE?
OP had a packed apple juice with her.
She says that she likes having something sugary on her in case something happens because she is diabetic; her brother then asked her if they could switch the juices since she didn’t even need it at the moment.
WHAT DID OP SAY?
But OP refused and said that their juice had no sugar and that her sugar rate suddenly goes low sometimes. Because her sugar suddenly goes down so she likes to be prepared.
WHAT DID HER SIL SAY?
Her SIL said they were close to reaching the house, and she was sure nothing would happen to her in the 10-minute walk left to reach the house and that her niece was crying because her sensory issues couldn’t handle the little orange juice chunks.
OP wasn’t sure if autism does that, but that’s what her SIL said.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
She refused again, and they went home with her niece screaming her lungs out that she wanted my juice, and it ruined the whole mood and made everyone annoyed.
WHAT HER BROTHER AND SIL SAID?
Her brother and SIL are a little mad at her for not understanding her niece’s sensory issues, but OP questions, “Shouldn’t they have prepared a backup juice in case this happened to my niece?”.
WHAT HAPPENED TO OP?
She also added that nothing happened to her sugar rate on her way down like her SIL said she was sure of, but she still wasn’t comfortable, but she was confused about how she felt then.
OP asks if she is a jerk.
UPDATE ABOUT ORANGE JUICE
OP added that the brand is al marai orange juice, and the package said ‘low sugar’ and yes, it had chunks, but they were very tiny and not a lot, but she guessed she couldn’t handle them, and the reason they packed it is that she sometimes doesn’t mind tiny chunks in her drink and that’s why they didn’t have backup juice with them.
IT IS THEIR FAULT
“So, their daughter has sensory issues, and they pack a sugar-free orange juice with chunks in it, and they’re giving YOU a hard time? These fools need to be mad at themselves. You have a medical condition that you were prepared for. Not a jerk.”
WHY DID HER PARENTS PACK HER ORANGE JUICE WITH CHUNKS
“Not a jerk. If your niece has sensory issues with the orange juice pulp, then why did her parents pack her juice that has pulp in it? Why didn’t they prepare and bring something that their child would drink?
Their lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on your behalf. If you had given the juice to her and then had a hypo in that 10 minutes, would they have rendered adequate, necessary, and timely aid?
No, because they didn’t have anything that would help, and if they can’t provide their kid a drink on a hike, you know they are going to have no idea what to do to help you.”
YOU NO NEED TO RISK YOUR HEALTH
‘Autistic children that age won’t always listen to reason or things like “I need this because for me it’s medicine” but that doesn’t mean you should risk your health over it.”
IT IS UNFAIR
“If it’s “only 10 minutes,” it’s also only 10 minutes of crying. Not pleasant but not in any way comparable to your risk as a diabetic. Ten minutes can be life or death for you; 10 minutes of meltdown is no fun but actually is pretty normal as a parent.”
