Backstory
OP (Original Poster) lives in a state affected by the wildfires in Canada. Today, they were in Code Red for air quality and the warnings specifically said for young children to stay inside.
What Did OP Tell His Wife?
OP told this to his wife at around 10 am because she had been planning on taking them to an outdoor event while at her mother’s.
OP said not to and that it could wait for another day. Later on in the day, OP noticed her location was the exact place this event is at. She had their 3 and 1-year-old out at this event in harmful air quality.
What Happened When OP Confronted Her?
When OP confronted her, she said “Well our son really wanted to go.”
To be honest, OP was just speechless. He couldn’t believe that she disregarded warnings that this air quality could have short and long-term effects on their kids. They had plenty of health issues with their son so that’s why OP was so angry.
OP Says What?
“What’s worse is she snuck off about it, had I not noticed the location change then I wouldn’t have even known. I yelled at her and told her that I was just disgusted at the disregard for our kids’ health. Am I a jerk?”, asks OP.
No Common Sense At All
“Not the jerk. She apparently doesn’t have much common sense and she’s the jerk. As an adult, she shouldn’t let a toddler make health decisions for her and their siblings. Shame on her. Their little lungs don’t need all that smoke exposure, especially since your son has had problems before.”
Your Wife’s Behavior Is Alarming
“Not the jerk, we’re in an area affected by the wildfire smoke and it’s pretty miserable to be outside in this, even masked. After 15 minutes out to pick up groceries, our eyes were watering from the smoke.
Your children’s health is paramount and your wife’s seeming disregard for this is alarming.”
It Was a Blatant Disregard
“No. Not by a long shot. I live in Canada where the air quality has recently been very poor. I’m a grown-ass 26yo man and I was having a hard time breathing outside in that. It gets physically painful to breathe after only about 10-15 minutes.
I can’t imagine how that would be for a child and I would absolutely never let a little kid out in that air quality. Especially not one with pre-existing health conditions. There are a lot of ways to entertain your kids indoors. She should never have even considered an outdoor thing under those conditions. It was 100% a blatant disregard for your kids’ health and well-being.”
That’s So Reckless Of Her
“I’m in upstate NY and have breathing issues. I couldn’t even get half my chores done today from the smoke. I can’t even imagine how reckless that was of her. Was her mom egging this on? Even the deer around here are on edge. This is real.”
Their Health Should’ve Been Her Priority
“Your kids’ health is the top priority. That should have been that. I am also in the affected area and the air quality was *awful*. I mean it’s bad enough that outdoor concerts are being canceled, and that’s because of how dangerous it would be for *adults* to be exposed to this air quality.
This isn’t a little sub-optimal air quality warning. It was *bad*. Absolutely horrifying that your wife exposed the two young kids to that for no real reason at all.”
