Who sleeps with a TV on? Apparently, some people do! An internet user asked, “Am I a jerk for not allowing my husband to fall asleep with the TV on?”.
Let’s have a look at the story in detail.
Backstory
Last night, the Original Poster (OP) got into a big fight with her husband, because when they went to sleep, he wanted the TV on.
What Exactly Happened?
OP’s husband claims he can’t fall asleep without the TV on, but OP can’t fall asleep unless she’s in a dark room. OP thinks sleeping with the TV on is bad for your sleep quality and health.
“It’s a bad habit that irks me and it prevents me from falling asleep.”, says OP.
Their Thoughts On The Issue
OP’s husband thinks she should just patiently wait to go to sleep until he falls asleep so that he can fall asleep with the TV on. OP thinks this is a ridiculous ask and really selfish.
She also thinks he needs to break this bad habit and not expect her not to go to sleep over it.
OP’s Husband Claims What?
OP’s husband claims that because she didn’t let him fall asleep with the TV on last night, he couldn’t get good sleep at all. He also missed his workout in the morning because his sleep was so terrible.
Their Sleep Routines
OP’s husband says he gets a lot less sleep than OP and that he needs to get up a lot earlier than her and commute long hours when she doesn’t, so his sleep should be prioritized. OP works from home and gets up much later.
“Am I the jerk for not letting him fall asleep with the TV on?”, asks OP.
Some More Context
OP later edited the post and added the following information
“I’ve suggested sleeping in separate rooms many times due to his snoring and he is adamantly against it.”
OP now wants to know if she is the jery here.
No Jerks Here
“No jerks here. Does the TV have a timer? Is there a way to agree to a set time limit? Can you get an eye mask and have no volume? There has to be a compromise. Your sleep can’t be sacrificed for your partner’s.”
Everyone’s In The Wrong
“Everyone’s in the wrong. It’s okay to have different sleep needs. He’s being inconsiderate of yours, and you are insisting your way is the only correct way.”
You Guys Need To Come To A Compromise
“You two should have a mature discussion and come to a compromise that meets everyone’s needs. Would listening to a podcast help him fall asleep? Great, Spotify has tons of podcasts for sleeping and a sleep timer that will turn itself off after a certain amount of time.
Do you need absolute darkness but he likes a little light? There are plenty of sleep masks on Amazon, the one I have is soft and doesn’t put any pressure on my eyes.
There is a solution. Break down the problem and figure out how to meet each other’s needs”
He Should Get Into Audiobooks
“Not the jerk. He should get into audiobooks. Audible has a sleep timer and everything. He’ll be out within 8 minutes. Might need some good headphones or earbuds though.”
