Behaviors that are widely accepted, such as hidden addictions, can be difficult to identify and address because they can become normalized over time due to social pressure, lack of awareness, and cultural influences. While these behaviors may seem normal due to their commonality, they can still be harmful.
A user asked, what is an addiction society pretends is a necessity? And here are the top 10 things we agree on:
1. Obsessing Over Celebrities’ Personal Lives
There are far too many who are addicted to knowing what is happening in celebrities’ life. “I don’t care who’s dating who, who had a baby, who got divorced, etc., and I don’t understand why anyone else does.” said one.
“Our ape brains recognize famous people and think they’re our friends. I read about this in detail a little while ago; exciting stuff. It’s why young groupies get into trouble backstage; they trust the famous person far too much.” said another.
2. Cell phones
This needs no introduction. The increasing reliance on cell phones for social connection, entertainment, and productivity has led to a growing addiction, potentially negatively impacting mental health and well-being.
“Constantly having it nearby, checking it all the time, having to be available 24/7 in case someone tries to contact you. As someone with this addiction, it’s unhealthy and adds a lot of unnecessary stress to my life.” a user said.
“Being too connected to friends or social media, you don’t need to be constantly on your phone and to stop what you are doing every 5 minutes to look at your phone.” another said.

3. To Look Best On Social Media
The rise of social media platforms has contributed to a growing addiction to online engagement, leading to potential adverse consequences such as increased stress, anxiety, and disconnection from reality.
“Trying to look the best on social media, and I don’t get it and never will.” said one. “Yes, and all the apps they use to make their skin look flawless with no wrinkles and blemishes? I see women I know post pictures on social media, and there is no way they look like that in real life.” another said.
4. Comparison
“Some people are addicted to comparing their lives to others when they should strive to be the best they can be. Trying to outperform others leads to endless frustration, but trying to outperform yourself leads to real improvement.” said one.

5. Sugar
Well, this is something we all know but don’t act on.
“Completely unnoticed. So much sugar in things people just don’t expect or check. Thinking of sugar as a drug has helped me enjoy it more responsibly.” a user said.
“I’ve been fighting this for years. It’s so difficult, and almost nobody takes it seriously, and that’s the worst part.” another said.
6. Caffeine
Many people rely on caffeine to stay alert and productive, but excessive consumption can lead to negative side effects such as jitteriness, anxiety, and disrupted sleep patterns.
“People are always shocked when they learn I do not drink coffee like I am the one with a problem.” said one.
“It’s a literal addictive drug that people joke about not being able to start their day without, and then consume it at their office jobs.” another said.

7. Fast/Unhealthy Food
Reliance on unhealthy and processed foods, contribute to a range of health issues such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.
“I’m struggling with fast food right now. You never realize how addicting it is until you try to stop.” said one. “Currently in bed after vomiting fast food after not eating it for a long time. Don’t eat it, guys; it’s not worth it.” said another.
8. Work
While hard work is good, too much of it is an addiction.
“While hard work is seen as a virtue to most people, overworking or “workaholism” can be a mental health condition and often a serious one.” said one.
“Working overtime and doing more work than the job description entails is what people pretend is necessary.” another said.

9. Staying Up Late And Waking Up Early
“I know it’s bad, but I want to watch death note at 1 am, and nothing’s gonna stop me.” said one. “Poor sleep hygiene is not something to be proud of.” another said.
10. Alcohol
“I’m so tired of people telling me I’m not living my life ’cause I don’t drink.” said one.
“Living in Wisconsin, the state that has alcoholism as a state pastime, I get a few weird looks every so often when I tell people I don’t drink. I have an entire family tree from my mom’s side that drank themselves to death. I’m good, fam.” another added.
