In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to overlook the small things that can significantly impact our well-being. Embracing simple yet transformative changes can lead to a remarkable improvement in our quality of life.
A user asked the forum, “What improved your quality of life so much that you wish you did it sooner?
SLEEPING
“Sleeping 7+ hrs”
IGNORING PEOPLE
“Ignoring people I don’t like.”
BEING PATIENT AND GRATEFUL
“Practising patience, being grateful, controlling my emotions.”
TRUSTING ACTIONS NOT WORDS
“Being able to view people’s actions and not rely on their words.
People lie easily. If someone can’t follow their words, they aren’t worth listening to.”
GOING TO THERAPY
“Going to therapy. I am the sick kid in a family of healthy never go to the doctor kind.
No one understands what I went through. I had major PTSD to the point I didn’t sleep in bed with my wife from waking up swinging and kicking.
Getting treatment from someone who had no judgement was life-changing.”
LOSING WEIGHT
“Losing weight, was overweight from 11 to 30, in my late 30s now, wish I’d lost it all years before.”
GETTING IN A MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIP
“Getting in a meaningful relationship with a partner that respects not only me, but also my time, money, property, and beliefs.”
EXERCISE AND STOICISM
“Exercise and stoicism (the philosophy and practice) are probably the 2 changes that made my life bearable.”
QUITTING SMOKING
“Stopped smoking weed every day. I actually sleep much better without it and I don’t have a medical condition the weed would help alleviate.
Dealing with anxiety is better too.”
GIVING UP BOOZE
“Gave up booze.
I have more money. Better sleep. Less anxiety. Better family relationships. Fitter.
Better, stronger, faster.”
REMOVING GALLBLADDER
“Very specific, but having my gallbladder removed. My doctor kept telling me to change my diet and habits.
And I did, but I can’t control what other people put in their food. Thanksgiving was the worse. The next day after my surgery, felt great. The following day, finally had a burger. Haven’t had one in close to two years.”
GETTING RICE COOKER AND AIR FRYER
“It might sound weird, but getting a rice cooker and air fryer.
I spend now like half the time I used before in the kitchen and eat healthier.”
QUIT GAMING
“Quitting gaming, so much more time to learn new stuff.”
BUYING EARPLUGS
“Ear plugs. I have 3 versions from Loop. Just found out I have autism but it makes sense; the sound is exhausting to me.
With two young boys, the earplugs are heaven-sent. I wear them to museums and enjoy the quiet that much more.
Strongly recommend it to parents, concert-goers, and people who enjoy solitude but may live in smaller quarters/spaces. Solitude is my friend and earplugs help solidify that.”
ANTIDEPRESSANTS
“Going on antidepressants.
I had anxiety from 14-27 that caused me to fear pursuing things in life and putting myself out there, and then angry about it too.
I had a hard time finding the good things in life and even if I did, I struggled to hold onto them. For the longest time I believed that the drugs were overkill, that they were for truly messed up institutionalized people and my pride wouldn’t have it.
I hit a real low after 3 failed relationships 3 months of lockdown and a suicide attempt all in a single year, and was convinced to give them a shot. I think everyone experiences them a bit differently, but for me the drugs just blunted all emotion and gave me greater control over whether to listen to or dismiss a feeling.
When that happens it makes room for positive pathways in the brain to be reinforced and become stronger, and it lets you break the negative emotion spiral. I’ve been off them for a bit over half a year now and the difference from before is insane. I haven’t felt this free in my life.”
TRADE UNION
“Joined a trade union. Not all are created equal though so you have to do some homework.”
RELOCATING TO ANOTHER CITY
“Relocated to another country. It was a breath of fresh air to get away from the toxic American political nonsense and constant bickering. It was also good to experience something new.”
DELETING FACEBOOK
“Deleting Facebook. Now I don’t see Becky complaining that someone dumped her today or that Debra is on holiday for the 99th time this week.”
EMBRACING MISTAKES
“Embracing mistakes. Since I’ve changed my outlook on mistakes, I’ve made more but also succeeded more.”
