For many people, the digital nomadic lifestyle is a dream come true. The ability to work remotely and travel the world is a tempting proposition. A user asked the forum, “What’s your long-term plan as a digital nomad?”
Here are some responses he got!
WORKING UNTIL AI MAKES ME REDUNDANT
“Keep going till Artificial Intelligence (AI) makes me redundant. Then I guess I’ll return to working in kitchens, but at least I’ll have some good memories.”
PREPARING FOR THE NEXT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
“Long term at this point for the world is the next presidential election so, just staying frosty, trying to stay one step ahead of Artificial Intelligence (AI) gigs and sitting near the door a lot.”
SNOWBIRD LIFE
“Bounce between the Pacific Northwesterners summers and Caribbean ‘winters’ with a couple of months a year sprinkled in for sea.”
FINDING THE PERFECT BASES
“Ideally, I have 2-3 bases I can rotate between. The hard part is finding which ones I want in my rotation and visas that let you stay longer than 2-3 months.”
AT LEAST 2 OTHER HOMES IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES
“At least two other homes in 2 different countries other than my home country. Use it as a “home base” when on that continent. Being able to afford it (taxes, maintenance) without renting it.”
DOING THINGS I LOVE
“I only work part-time now but plan to cut hours to the minimum (currently, I need to work 200 hours/year to support my standard of living) in the next couple of years when my base is built to fit my needs. I will spend my semi-retirement growing food, doing ‘Do it Yourself’ (DIY) projects, traveling around doing various off-grid trips, and fostering creatures.”
FINDING PEACE AND HAPPINESS
“My retirement plan revolves around finding peace, happiness, and enjoying life to the fullest. Whether it’s traveling, spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or simply relishing the serenity of each day, I believe retirement should be a time to savor the simple pleasures and create lasting memories. Here’s to a fulfilling and joyful retirement for all!”
PRIORITISE HEALTH OVER EVERYTHING ELSE
“Prioritise health over everything else. Cook and find the best food worldwide, and learn to do business with lower stress levels and less hurry.”
LEARN TO BUILD BUSINESSES
“Learn to build businesses. Now, at $120K per year solo, I’ve found a formula I can repeat to build it bigger. $200K or $400K shouldn’t be impossible, but I need to start outsourcing and building more “professional” processes to remove bottlenecks. $1 million a year would be cool.”
END UP IN NEW YORK CITY
“My goal is to end up in New York City. But that’s only after I am done traveling the world as a digital nomad.”
BUYING INDEX FUNDS
“Retirement plan is real estate and probably operating a bed and breakfast/ providing lodging. I’ll mostly settle down in a new country.
If I had a higher-paid career, I’d stick to buying index funds.”
TRAVEL UNTIL PHYSICALLY OR FINANCIALLY UNABLE
“I think I will travel until I am physically or financially unable to. I have a base in Poland and think I will retire there or in Italy. I spend half the year in the US, mostly Florida now, and I see no reason to stop that voluntarily.”
ACCELERATE MY SAVINGS/INVESTMENTS WHILE TRAVELING
“I’m over-employed (working multiple remote jobs) and live the digital nomad life. All I care about in this world is to experience more and to have freedom.
So, the goal is to accelerate my savings/investments while traveling, and hopefully, I can get to a point where I no longer need to be a wage slave.”
LIVE IN A PLACE WITH HIGH TAXES AND GREAT LIFESTYLE
“Live in a place with high taxes and a great lifestyle while having a company in a low tax jurisdiction. You’ll only need to make 50 to 70% of what a local person makes while living the same lifestyle.”
SWITCH INTO SOLUTIONS ENGINEERING
“Code saves a bunch of money, and I enjoy traveling, then switch into solutions engineering in Europe and split my time between Asia and Europe.”
